Starting in front of the sprayhood, the awning comes aft to cover the companion way and cockpit area creating a perfectly shaded area for the owners and their guest to relax in. In addition to helping keep the cockpit cool the awning helps to reduce the temperature below decks as well, this has the benefit of not having to run the aircon so often reducing noise and maintenance.

The sprayhood and tensile awning are both made using WeatherMax80. The fabulous clarity of vision through the sprayhood is due to the Strataglass laminated window material.

Karver KSF Top Down Furler

Karver Top Down Furler

The setting of ’positive luff’ off wind sails like the Cruising Chute, Asymmetric or Gennaker has been made much easier with the introduction of the Top Down furler. The system is set between the head and tack of the sail with a torsional stay and furls from the head down. It is a quick and easy – watch the video to see how simple it is.

Going Grey!

Grey Performance Cruise Laminate
Grey Performance Cruise Laminate

Increasingly as owner’s colour schemes for their yachts have developed there has been a call for an alternative colour from the standard white sail fabric. As a result, in line with our continuing product development we have listened to our customer’s requirements and over the winter months Dolphin Sails have been working with Dimension Polyant, our main cloth supplier, to produce a Grey version of the well proven DYS Dyneema cruise laminate. This new fabric is unique in that the taffetas are now woven with different colour yarns to give the grey colour rather than dying an existing white taffeta Grey. This process gives a more constant colour throughout the sail rather than the slight colour differences that can result with dyed fabrics.

The first set of grey sails have been supplied to the newly launched Oyster 575, as you can see from the photos taken during a sea trial it will certainly make your yacht stand out.

We have ordered a large quantity of the Grey DYS Dyneema in fabric weights to suit yachts up to and including the 62’ footer. Orders for yachts over 65’ will require a special order with a longer lead time.

This brings another element into effect while deciding on the theme for your new or existing boat, the choice of should you go for the new grey or traditional white…..

Washing & Servicing

Dolphin Sails and Covers offer a full in house washing and servicing facility. Our expert team can carefully clean each item before inspecting it and advising you of any work required.

Dolphin Sails are one of the very few sailmakers to do their own washing. We have a dedicated area for the washing of sails and covers. It is important to de salt and clean items before winter storage and to help them come out in the spring looking their best. By doing our own washing we are able to ensure great care is taken through out the process so that any fabric is not prematurely aged. It also helps us identify areas that will need servicing and we can advise our customers of what work is required.

Sails and covers that have been professionally clean and serviced will last longer and look better.

Tensile Awning

If you have ever been on board a boat in a hot climate you will know how uncomfortable the burning sun or high temperatures can be – even if you are lucky enough to run the air conditioning it can be quite unpleasant. This Tensile Awning has been fitted to an Oyster 54 in the beautiful setting of Palma Marina. Within minutes of the Tensile Awning going up the skipper noticed a big drop in on deck and below deck temperatures – so much so that the air conditioning was switched off! Designed using specialist form finding software we were able to maximise the protection it gives the boat but minimise the time and effort required to fit it. A key feature is that it does not require any battens! The main section is made using WeatherMax80, a fabric that is half the weight, twice as strong and more stable than traditional acrylic. We would expect this awning to offer great protection even in a Force 7. The mesh side panels offer two benefits. Firstly when the sun is low in the sky they protect anyone sitting in the cockpit from burning. Secondly, they can help keep out the inclement weather. The mesh only allows a gentle breeze though rather than a gale and in the event of rain it will also offer protection An added bonus to the mesh panels is that they do offer greater privacy. Without blocking the view from the boat it prevents on lookers from staring in. Each awning is designed uniquely for each boat.
